Only Room for One at the Top

He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.  [Colossians 1:15-18]

That in everything He might be preeminent.

There is room for only One at the top in the Kingdom of Heaven and that One is Jesus the Christ, the Anointed One of the Father.

For most men, the goal of success is to get to the top, but there is no place at the top for you and me. Our greatest achievement can only be found in serving the One at the top with excellence –– to let our light shine so that men watching us will see Jesus. It is to become small so that Christ is seen big. He must increase and I must decrease. The greater I become in the eyes of men the more difficult it is for men to see Him.

The goal of excellence is to turn the corporate pyramid upside down and drive not to the top, but dive to the bottom –– the place where servants live and work. The goal of success is not to stand at the top with many doing my bidding; not to rise above men, but to bend beneath them.

To Serve, not rule;

To lead, not drive;

Carrying,

Lifting,

Helping,

Applauding the achievements of others instead of trumpeting my own.

Lift the little,

Strengthen the weak,

Bind the broken,

Encourage the faltering,

The great leaders are not at the top; they are at the bottom –– serving others, washing their feet, lifting them up; and in so doing . . . pleasing the One who sits upon the Throne.
